Spain's non-lucrative visa in 2026: funds, family and first-year requirements

Last verified 12 October 2026

Residence funded independently of work.

Non-lucrative residence lets a qualifying non-EU applicant live in Spain without carrying out employment or professional activity. It can suit retirement or a move supported by savings, pensions or other independent resources. It is a first-year residence route with a consular visa procedure, not a general permission to work remotely from Spain.

The financial minimum is only one part of the application. The source and availability of the money, suitable health cover, family eligibility, personal circumstances and the consulate's document instructions all matter. This guide covers the initial application; renewal, a later work permission and tax planning require separate checks.

Quick summary

  • The 2026 reference is IPREM of EUR 600 per month: 400% for the applicant and another 100% for each qualifying accompanying family member.
  • For a first year, that is EUR 28,800 for one applicant, EUR 36,000 for a couple, or EUR 43,200 for an applicant with two eligible relatives.
  • Employment, freelance work and continuing a remote job are incompatible with this non-working route.
  • The initial residence authorization lasts one year. The entry visa's validity is a separate, shorter period.
  • Apply through the Spanish consulate responsible for where you reside; its appointment and evidence instructions can vary.
  • Request the TIE within one month of entering Spain after approval.

Who this route is for

The ordinary non-lucrative route is for people outside the EU/EEA/Swiss free-movement regime who can sustain the stay without working. Start with your actual plans: retirement and independent resources are different from a foreign employer allowing you to work from Spain. Being paid by an overseas company does not make that work non-lucrative. If employment or professional activity will continue, compare the international teleworker route or another relevant work permission before choosing this application.

How to calculate the first-year minimum

The requirement is linked to IPREM, not Spain's minimum wage. In 2026, EUR 600 multiplied by four gives EUR 2,400 per month for the applicant, or EUR 28,800 across twelve months. Add EUR 600 monthly, or EUR 7,200 yearly, for each qualifying relative. These are minimum reference amounts for the requested period. Prepare a realistic household budget as well: passing the immigration calculation does not show that the chosen housing and other living costs are affordable.

Income, savings and access to the money

The regulation allows sufficient resources for the residence period or a regular independent income source. A pension, accessible savings or documented investment income can be relevant, but the evidence must establish that the funds belong to you and are available. Do not double-count the same money as both savings and future income. For foreign accounts, the regulation calls for identifiable institutions and accounts, opening or closing information, the previous year-end balance and the average balance for the previous year.

Make the financial evidence explain the plan

Build a clear file showing where the resources come from, when they are received and how they cover the first year. Bring the consulate's requested bank certificates, statements, pension or other income records and any necessary translations. Washington's 2026 guidance, for example, asks for recent statements and bank certification; your own consulate may use a different checklist. Where income comes from company holdings, the regulation requires evidence and a declaration that you do not work in those companies. A business label alone does not prove passive income.

Which family members can accompany you

Adding EUR 7,200 does not make any relative eligible. The current non-lucrative family definition covers a spouse, registered partner or properly evidenced stable partner, eligible minor children and specified adult children who need support because of disability or health. A stable partnership normally needs a continuous year of marital-type cohabitation, with a different evidential rule where there are children in common. Check relationship, age, dependency and civil-status evidence separately. Parents are not listed in this initial route's family definition.

Health cover and personal-circumstances evidence

You need qualifying public or private health insurance from an insurer authorized to operate in Spain. Check the coverage period, benefits and your consulate's exclusions; a travel policy should not be assumed to satisfy residence insurance. The file also includes a passport valid for at least a year, relevant criminal-record certificates covering the preceding five years, a medical certificate and fee evidence. An unexpired assisted-return commitment is a distinct condition under this route. Entry restrictions and public-order or health concerns also need the proper assessment.

The consular application and arrival steps

Apply personally, or through a permitted representative where applicable, at the competent consular office. The visa request also starts the residence-authorization process. The authorization decision has a one-month statutory clock from the authority's receipt of the consular communication; that is not a promise that appointments, visa processing and document preparation take one month altogether. After approval, follow the visa collection instructions and enter within its validity, which is no longer than three months. The one-year residence period starts on entry; apply for the TIE within the following month.

Plan the first year and the next application separately

Keep financial records, insurance evidence and the residence decision so that a later renewal can be assessed on the facts then applicable. Funds for the first year do not automatically prove resources for a longer renewal period. Residence conditions, family schooling where applicable and the renewal filing window also need checking. If you intend to start work later, obtain advice about the relevant change of status before taking up the activity. The immigration permission does not determine your tax position by itself.
