Sweden work permit extensions: the 1 December 2026 salary deadline

Last reviewed 12 October 2026

Check your permit expiry before relying on the lower salary level.

The old salary test can still apply to a work-permit extension received by Migrationsverket on or before 1 December 2026, when the current permit was granted under the rules before 1 June 2026. Based on the current national median, that test requires at least SEK 30,640 per month.

The deadline does not allow everyone to extend early. You can normally submit an extension no more than two months before the current permit expires, and you must submit before expiry. Both conditions have to fit your case.

Which extension can use the transition?

The transition concerns an existing ordinary work permit granted under the older rules. It does not turn a first application into an extension or change the rules that governed your previous employment. Keep the decision for your current permit and confirm which rules it used. You must also meet the other extension requirements, including a qualifying job and compliant employment during the previous permit.

The two-month window determines your earliest filing date

Count back two calendar months from the expiry date printed on your current permit. An expiry on 1 February 2027 opens the window on 1 December. An expiry on 2 February opens it on 2 December, when the salary transition has already ended. A March expiry therefore does not give an ordinary applicant permission to file in November simply to obtain the lower test.

What changes from 2 December?

Extensions received from 2 December 2026 use the new salary requirement, normally 90% of the median salary current at filing. The current figure is SEK 34,470 per month. A qualifying occupation or applicant exemption can change the percentage, so check the applicable exemption rather than assuming that everyone needs the same amount. Collective agreements or normal industry practice can require a higher salary under either test.

The employer starts; you complete and submit

Your employer starts the extension in the e-service and gives the relevant union an opportunity to comment. You then receive the link, complete your part, attach the required evidence and submit. Migrationsverket registers the application only when you have completed that step. An employer draft or an email link created before 1 December is not proof that the application arrived by the deadline. Keep the submission receipt.

The deadline does not replace the expiry rule

Apply while your current permit is still valid. An earlier expiry can give you a deadline before December, and waiting until 1 December may then be too late. Working during the processing period has its own conditions, including filing on time. If you are also applying for permanent residence, check the qualifying history and route-specific filing guidance; a convenient salary date does not establish the required residence and work history.

Make a filing plan using actual dates and documents

Check the current permit decision and expiry, the earliest filing date, your signed employment agreement, the proposed salary, the occupation and any exemption. Ask the employer to start in enough time for you to finish the application within the permitted window. Review payslips, insurance and other previous employment conditions. If an unusual filing situation or decision date changes the ordinary sequence, confirm it with Migrationsverket before relying on the transition.
